I have only just learned of the sad passing of Des. I only passed by his house this morning and he crossed my mind that I hadn't seen him in a while. And now I know why, poor Des. I feel like I have known him forever as I went to school with young Des.
I would often meet Pauline and her Dad at the 6pm Saturday Mass and we might have a quick few words. When I began teaching in the De La Salle, Des was a member of the Board of Management, one of many responsibilities that he wore lightly but took seriously. I got to know him really well when I became unwell and I would meet him daily going to the shop for his paper. We would both trundle along together. Sport was always a part of the conversation as was family and some news.
He always made sense, he was so practical. I remember when he called me over to tell me about Neil's death which completely floored me. He explained how medically he wasn't able to travel and that this upset him but he was eminently stoic, resilient, and thoughtful. I am so grateful for all the conversations, the many laughs, the slow walks the salutes from the gate and the odd word at the church.
I will always remember him for his integrity and kindness especially when things were tough for him. We had much to learn from him, after all he was at heart a teacher! We give thanks for his long life as we offer sincerest condolences to his Pauline, Des and the extended family. We remember all who will miss him.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílís.
