John Connolly, aged 25, was a Lieutenant in the Bandon Battalion of the local old IRA. He was arrested at his cousins' farm house, in Fitzgerald’s of Maulnaskimlehane, on the 23rd September 1920. Lieut. Connolly was taken into the barracks at Allen Square, where he was interrogated for a full week.  On the 1st of October he was taken to Castle Bernard Park in Bandon and executed by the Essex Regiment. A steel cross still marks the spot in the Park where he died.
