I'm so sorry that I cannot be there for the celebration of Sam's life.

I have an unforgettable memory of Sam at the first every May Day march I attended (probably 2001/2002). He gave an absolutely barnstorming anti-capitalist and socialist speech. I remember being struck by it and asking others about who this man was.

I didn't ever get to know Sam well but have been privileged to become a friend and comrade of Helena. My thoughts and hugs are with you Helena and everybody else who was close to Sam.
— Paul Murphy

My condolences to the Nolan family and to Sam's partner Helena on his passing. As a member of a large neighbor-family, I have fond memories of Sam teaching myself and his son Brent the noble art of boxing in their back garden, complete with leather gloves. Later I took up a more bookish kind of boxing, but as Sam said of his early commitment to fighting injustice and inequality in the world, and the need therefore to understand all its political and economic complexities through self-education "Books were the key." Books are the best boxing gloves, and thanks to what came out of them Sam landed not a few fair but telling punches. RIP.
— Hugh Cummins

I knew Sam very well from my time in the Connolly Youth, and CP. However, I also heard of him from one of his fellow comrades, Ambi Collins, who was my Uncle. I did know him before joining the Connolly Youth, as I joined the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers when I started my apprentiship in 1965. Later, when I finished my apprentiship, I worked with Sam in SISK along with Jimmy Ferguson.
