Martina and family
I felt I had to write and tell you of the wonderful man MICHAEL was. My Dad, Sean O’Dwyer of Clonmel was a dear friend of his for 50 years and what a friend he was. I know Michael since I was 9 yrs old and I’m now 70years this year.
I always found Michael such good fun, he loved Gaeilge and always encouraged us to like it and converse in it.
He was so good to my Dad and the biggest thing he ever did for him was to teach him how to read music which opened many doors for my Dad - where he got work playing at all the musicals around Tipperary not least CARRICK-ON-SUIR when he was trying to rear a family of six.
Saying thank you doesn’t seem to cover what his friendship meant to my late Dad Sean, my mother Peggy and the six of us 4 girls and 2 boys.
May his gentle and powerful presence RIP

A wonderful poet, a wonderful man. May he rest in peace.

In 1990 when I taught English in Scoil Mhuire, Greenhill, Michael visited to read his poems, and talk about Carrick. I greatly loved his poems about the place, the Suir, the town, the back lanes and by ways and lives of the people. I’m still familiar with many of the poems. I will miss Michael, and may he rest in peace.
— Michael Hanly

My condolences to Michael's family & friends! A great loss for those closest to him, for Ireland losing a great poet and writer, and for Carrick-on-Suir losing a man who was a treasure trove of local knowledge in traditions, lore, geneaology, etc. I met Michael Coady online in the late 90's when searching for my own acting website. To find a great Irish poet sharing my name was a thrill being a published poet in my homeland of Newfoundland (though mine could not touch the legacy of that Michael Coady's work). I immediately bought "All Souls" and his work truly resonated with me. I know a great writer when they inspire me to write - reading one turn of phrase from Michael had me off writing a poem. There were other synergies - he was my father's age, named after his grandfather (I believe) as was I. He was from my mother's ancestral homeland, being a Burke with roots in Carrick-on-Suir. I then learned he had been to Newfoundland or at least had written about the Irish here. I found a connection who gave me his email address and we began corresponding. He was generous and accessible. In another serendipitous connection, one of my Burke cousins who was in Carrick-on-Suir doing geneaological research came to a deadend at the library and asked for any local expertise. The librarian said, "That would be Michael Coady" and at that moment, Michael appeared and they made the connection back to me! Small world! I regret not getting to Ireland to meet him. Rest in Peace, Michael!

So sorry to hear of the death of Michael Coady. My condolences to his family. He taught me in 5th and 6th class. Any fluency I have in Irish I got from him. I remember we had ten minutes in class to talk among ourselves so long as it was as gaeilge. We also reenacted the previous night's TV as gaeilge. He knew how a language should be taught. Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís.
— Paul Hurley

To Martina, Niamh, Lucy and James, our sincere condolences Michael's sad passing. Michael was a true legend and hero. His poems and stories fostered a love and appreciation of our local wealth, culture and history in Carrick and far beyond. I'll never forget when he read his hilarious "Carrick 9" in Mickey and Maureen Pollard's pub for my 50th birthday. He held us all in the palm of his hand. A memory to be treasured forever. Candles lit here on the Oileán in his memory xxx

Was delighted to get to meet him many years later and he would always bring me up to date on Carrick news. He was an outstanding historian and scholar and and it was so fitting that he returned home to Carrick to share his skills with his own people for a lifetime. May he rest in well deserved peace.

DOOLIN VOICES
for Michael Coady

They speak to me still
between the notes
of concertina, flute,
bodhrán and whistle.

In the lilting voice
of local and visitor,
in silent onlookers
who have no choice

But to keenly listen
and watch with relish
the evening’s gaiety
as night closes in

On the walk home,
where the sea lashes
the headland, a house
with a single room.
— John Liddy
