I'm so sorry to learn that Malcolm has died. We had known each other since we were fellow editors rewriting academics' unreadable texts for a family encyclopaedia more than 60 years ago. Malcolm was plainly cut out for greater things and, on becoming a successful novelist, sensibly left England for the writers' tax haven of Ireland. Since we reconnected by email a few years ago I have greatly enjoyed two of the fruits of his old age: Oliver Twist, rewritten with vast improvements on Dickens's surprisingly slipshod original, and a quiz devised to find out 'How really old are you?' By everyone old or young who knew him, Malcolm will be very much missed.
— David Lambert
He spoke with the purest of Northern Swedish accents - reflecting his sensitivity to culture and the arts. The way he drank his snaps and sang his snaps songs showed how he enjoyed being authentic. He was a great man, and a great friend, reaching out across generations. We will miss him, and remember him with equal measures of sadness and joy...
— Caroline and Douglas Hamilton

Malcolm was a man of remarkable talent, generosity, and intellect. He was a prolific author, leaving an indelible mark on the world of literature. His pen graced the pages of at least 30 novels, a rich tapestry of romantic and historical fiction that captured the imaginations of readers around the world.
His storytelling prowess transported us to different eras, weaving tales of love, passion, and adventure that will endure as a testament to his literary legacy. Beyond his accomplishments as an author, Malcolm was a beacon for aspiring writers. His selfless dedication to nurturing talent was evident in his establishment of a writers' group in Tullamore, where he graciously shared his knowledge and expertise. For years, he devoted two hours of his precious time each week, offering invaluable guidance to writers working on poems, novels, plays, and even scientific reports. His generosity knew no bounds, and his impact on the literary community extended far beyond the pages of his own works.
Malcolm's role as a mentor and editor was nothing short of brilliant. With a discerning eye and a deep understanding of the written word, he tirelessly polished and refined the works of others, elevating the craft of countless writers.
A gentleman whose kindness, intelligence, and passion for literature touched the lives of many. His memory will forever endure in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

I feel a deep loss today having learned of Malcolm's passing, he will always be one of Banagher's most notable people. In just one meeting he taught me more about writing than I ever learned anywhere else. I am proud that in 1985 he wrote the Preface to my book "Banagher on the Shannon" and was honoured when later he contributed to "Sceal an Móna" which I edited. I was even born in one of the lodges of Coolfin house which he renovated and turned into a wonderful mansion, with an avenue filled with 'fierce bumps'. I am very much upset now that I didn't get to visit him this year as I intended. To his family in Britain and Ireland both Catherine and I extend our deepest condolences, I knew few people in my life who could measure up to Malcolm, there's an extra star in the firmament but a still terrible emptiness with his passing.

Dearest Candy, Petra and your families, it is with the deepest of sympathies that I learn of your Dads passing. He was such a kind, knowledgeable and caring man. I was very glad to call him and your mom neighbours for so many years. His writing was just fabulous and to this day i often revert back to the well worn books and characters such as John Stevenson.
Malcom was truely a gentle man with a huge love of his Family.
May his gentle soul rest in peace xx
