I am writing on behalf of the school community to offer my sincere condolences following the death of John. I should like to extend our deepest sympathies to Mary, Jane, Louise, and Peter as well as to other members of the immediate and extended family.

We recall with pride and affection the substantial contribution John made to the life of The High School during his long tenure as a member of staff. He taught Chemistry, Biology, Science and Mathematics (as well as being a highly committed athletics coach) to generations of pupils between 1970 and 2004. His many skills and abilities resulted in appointments to positions as Form Teacher, Science Co-ordinator, Year Head, and finally Assistant Principal.

The High School has reason to be thankful that John chose to dedicate a significant proportion of his professional life to this institution where he is fondly remembered as a principled colleague of the highest integrity. We remain grateful for his kind and courteous example in engaging with the generations of staff, parents, and past pupils who mourn his loss to the school community.

It will undoubtedly be a very difficult and painful time for family, friends, and former colleagues both now and in the immediate future. However, you may be assured that we will continue to keep all of you in our thoughts and prayers at The High School whilst wishing you every strength and comfort during the months and years ahead.
— Mr G A Forrest, Principal, The High School

Dear Mary and Family I was really sorry to hear the very sad news about John. Although I knew him in HSD as Mr Toomey. I was never fortunate enough to have been taught by him. However he always made sure he knew and acknowledged every student. I can remember his presence in the corridors as he was so tall and of course his running around the pitches. Then our paths crossed Mary in AIB where you were so supportive to me. Thinking of you at this difficult time. May John rest in piece.

Sincere condolences to all the Toomey family.

John introduced me, and many others, to the wonders and joys of science. He taught us Biology, Chemistry and Physics from our first year in secondary school in 1970, up to the Inter cert examinations.

He was one, and certainly the first, of a fantastic set of teachers that set me on a career in science.

I especially remember the experiment with soil settling into layers in water, where the glass cylinder cracked under the weight of water and I was soaked in a litre of muddy water. John sorted out the mess without fuss, and I will never forget his wry smile at what had happened.

A truly inspiring teacher and great role model. Very much missed.
— Carl Smythe

It was my privilege to work with him for many years in UCD Education. He was always a gentle, kind and supportive colleague. His kindness was evident in all his dealings with his student teachers. I will miss our chats about our families, and the joys of running. John is now at peace. I hope you all find ways to cope with his huge loss.

I have known John since I was a little girl running around his house playing with Louise, Jane and Peter. He and my father Michael have been inseparable best friends since before I was born. When I was a high school and college athlete, John and I would talk running and training and he would take me on runs around UCD. He would always ask me about my races and times. In running and in life, John was always so genuinely interested in other people.
John’s effervescent personality, humor and easy nature made him such a wonderful person to be around. I can still hear his laugh.
How lucky we all are that John existed in the world. John was one of life’s great contributors. He will be missed by so many. My whole heart goes out to Mary, Louise, Peter and Jane.
