Miss Stokes was my Latin teacher in the early 80s at St Raphaelas. At first as a 1st year student I was terrified of her but by 6th year I loved her. (as we all did) I had wanted to study medicine and needed latin but only 5 girls wanted to do latin for leaving cert. Miss Stokes kindly taught the 5 of us for 2 years before school started in the mornings out of the goodness of her heart.
I also was unwell in 6th year for a few months and missed school but she kindly brought me to her home to help me with the English course. She was an amazing person and had a wonderfully positive influence on my life.
May I offer you my sincere condolences. Barbara

I wanted to express my deepest condolences for the passing of Joan. Although I never had the pleasure of knowing her personally, the stories I've heard about her incredible spirit and the profound impact she had on the communities in Ireland and Ghana have deeply moved me.

It's clear she was a selfless, loving, empathetic, and kind woman, whose legacy will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to feel her influence.

Joan's dedication to helping others and her positive impact on the world are truly inspirational. My thoughts are with you and everyone whose lives were touched by her remarkable presence, may God grant you peace. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
— Jennifer Nolan

Heartfelt condolences to all the Stokes and Lyons families on the death of Joan. I have such fond memories of this lovely lady….she was so warm and welcoming to me when I started as a very young teacher in St. Raphaela’s. She was a great colleague and Principal who looked after us all, both in school and out. I remember many lovely evenings around her dining-room table, where she not only fed us amazing dishes but also sent us home laden with enough for food for several more meals! Her baking, as mentioned by so many here, was legendary - we were never hungry in the staff room and I, particularly, looked forward to her amazing peanut butter cake and florentines! Joan was a gentle, generous and empathetic woman with a core of steel, who was totally dedicated to her family and her school. It was an honor to have known and worked with her. Nî bheidh a leithéid ann arís. Ceol na n-aingeal go gcloise sí anois, agus leaba i measc na naoimh go raibh aici. Órla
