I met Garrett in Akureyri (Iceland) at a conference on presidents. I was first struck by his kindness and generosity. As our conversation developed over the years, I really appreciated his open mind, wisdom and sense of humour. My thoughts are with his family and with Beatrice in particular. I send them my heartfelt condolences.
— Catherine Dupre
I was first in contact with Garrett when I was a callow undergraduate and he was my Professor. He was warm, supportive and witty, as well as learned - the ideal from the perspective of an overawed new student. He left a lasting impression on me and I am greatly saddened to hear of his passing. May he rest in peace. My best regards to his family.
— Martin Geoghegan (UCC)

Garrett was a wonderful teacher of philosophy. I remember him best in Lucan place on the Western Road where he would allow the clock to tick as he waited in the hope that the solution might dawn on us students. Full of subtle, refined reasoning but more importantly kind, good humoured, and with an impish delight in the absurd. Condolences to all the family and particularly to my friend Anna and Paul.
— Eoin O Kelly

Dear Beatrice,

My most sincere condolences on Garrett’s death.

In the almost 50 years that I knew him, from my time under his mentorship at UCC (he supervised my undergraduate thesis), to his valued friendship later in life, I always liked and respected Garrett. He had a unique capacity to see things from angles unavailable to most of the rest of us, thereby giving us the capacity to see many old and familiar things anew. Meeting him for coffee and conversation was always an occasion to be eagerly anticipated and enjoyed. My life has been richer and fuller for having known him.

I am so glad I had the opportunity to speak to him on the phone some months ago. I didn’t know then that it would be for the last time.

May God grant him his reward.
— Gerard Casey
